Why ODU for Military Children and Families Education?

Norfolk, Virginia, the home of ODU, is also home to the world’s largest Naval Base along with nearby Army, Air Force, Marine, and Coast Guard bases. We have a history of serving military-affiliated students almost as long as the university. As a research institution, we're in a unique position to share that knowledge.

From Pre-K through 12th grade, military-connected students have special academic, social, and emotional needs. This certificate guides teachers, counselors, and school leaders to best meet those unique needs.

In this graduate certificate program, you will learn to:

  • Identify, understand, and meet the educational needs of military children and families
  • Analyze schools, classroom, and individuals to identify specific support needs of the military-connected students and families
  • Design and implement programs to ease transition and adjustment for military-affiliated students and improve academic and social outcomes
