Credit for Real-World Learning
Old Dominion University’s Professional Experience Database is a set of formal agreements that grant academic credit at no additional cost to people who complete approved, nationally recognized learning such as industry certifications, employer training, military education and similar professional development. These agreements recognize prior learning and real-world experience to help you move faster toward a degree.
This agreement allows service members and veterans to apply approved military graduate certificates toward elective credit as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and the United States Armed Forces, for example the Naval Postgraduate School and the Air Force Institute of Technology, with program review by the School of Data Science Graduate Program Director and application within the 30 credit degree requirement.

This agreement allows insurance professionals with the CPCU designation to waive core courses as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and The Institutes, pending verification of CPCU transcripts by the Department of Finance and department chair approval for credit posting.

This agreement allows completers of noncredit, industry-aligned training to bank university credit as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and the Center for Professional Development, with portfolio or credential verification and posting coordinated by the CPD faculty committee.

This agreement allows cybersecurity professionals with approved industry certifications to earn degree credit as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and recognized certification bodies, for example CompTIA, ISC2, GIAC and Offensive Security, following certification review by the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and the Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research; the graduate credit option requires departmental approval.

Undergraduate maximum applied: 6 credits (3 per approved certification).
Graduate option: One approved certification may be applied as 3 graduate credits (departmental approval required).
This agreement allows energy and nuclear utility trainees to convert approved operator and reactor training into degree credit as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and Dominion Energy, pending verification and degree mapping by the Mechanical Engineering Technology program and final approval by the Batten College of Engineering and Technology.

This agreement allows service members and veterans to apply approved Naval Postgraduate School graduate certificates toward elective credit in Old Dominion University’s M.S. in Data Science and Analytics as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and the United States Armed Forces, with program review by the School of Data Science Graduate Program Director and application within the 30 credit degree requirement.

This agreement allows students from K-12 media and telecommunications programs to carry hands-on production experience into university credit as part of an agreement between Old Dominion University and Newport News Public Schools Telecommunications (NNPS-Telecom). In return, NNPS-Telecom offers internship opportunities to ODU students in Communication and Theatre Arts.
This agreement establishes a clear pathway for NNPS-Telecom students to matriculate to ODU with a Prior Learning Transfer Evaluation form and annual review administered by the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts.
