Mathematics Specialist (PreK-8) Endorsement

This program will increase your knowledge and enhance your teaching and leadership skills. It is for educators interested in expanding their expertise in mathematics education leadership.

Strengthen your ability to:

  • study mathematics for deepening content knowledge and awareness of mathematical connections;
  • engage ALL math learners (kids, adults, and differently abled) in productive struggle and sense making;
  • support teachers and administrators to improve mathematics learning and programs in schools; and
  • investigate mathematics learning and teaching and use findings for improvement.

This endorsement is designed for educators with a Virginia teaching license.

    • 21 credit hours

    You will take five math content courses and two courses in education.

  • Access course materials online from any location. Some classes will have live, regular online meeting times, while others will not. The instructor may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • With a mathematics specialist endorsement, you may be able to serve as a:

    • Mathematics specialist
    • Mathematics resource teacher
    • Mathematics coach

This licensure-only program is designed for educators with a Virginia teaching license who want a mathematics specialist endorsement.

  • This program is intended for licensed teachers in Virginia. To apply to this endorsement program, you should:

    • Have a master's degree
    • Have three years of successful classroom experience in teaching mathematics
    • Hold the Virginia Collegiate Professional License or an equivalent license from another state
