Why ODU for a school library practice certificate?
This certificate is designed to for students who already hold an MLS, MLIS, or equivalent degree and are seeking employment as a school librarian.
The courses in this academic certificate meet the competencies required by the Virginia Department of Education for school librarians. Most states require licensure or certification for K-12 school librarians. Licensure requirements vary by state.
ODU has a nationally recognized CAEP/ALA/AASL school library program. We've been educating future school librarians for over 50 years. Our school library program has been available through distance learning for over 10 years. You'll learn with faculty who are school library leaders, dedicated to school library excellence.
ODU also has an official ALA Student Chapter, the first one formed in Virginia.

Required Courses
- 12 credit hours (four courses)
You will learn how to:
- Prepare, evaluate, and present instructional materials
- Apply pedagogical theory to practical learning situations
- Apply children's (PK-8) literature across the curriculum, or promote literature and media for teens
- Partner with educators to teach information literacy skills
- Integrate library programs and services into the curriculum

Online Learning Environment
Access course materials online from any location. Some classes will have live, regular online meeting times, while others will not. The instructor may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

State Licensure
This certificate addresses the competencies required for school library media licensure in Virginia. It is not a state-approved endorsement program. Students who complete this certificate are responsible for providing transcripts/proof of this certificate to the state Department of Education for licensure.
Licensure requirements vary by state. To see if this certificate can meet your needs outside of Virginia, please check with the licensing body in the state where you want to teach.
