Why ODU for Literacy Coaching?

This certificate is designed to help current teachers gain the necessary skills and abilities for literacy coaching in a K-12 environment. You will learn research-based methods and instructional design skills to coach children who require enhanced instruction related to reading and writing. You will also be prepared to assess learning outcomes in literacy and to supervise classroom literacy programs.

Your courses will cover:

  • Foundations of Literacy Learning
  • School-Wide Assessment and Professional Development
  • New Literacies, Digital Technologies, and Learning
  • Organizing and Supervising Reading Program Development

Some coursework in this online literacy certificate may be applied toward our master's in Reading Education, which is NCATE/CAEP accredited.

This certificate is designed to be completed by current teachers with an initial teaching license. In Virginia, this is called a Collegiate Professional License or a Post-Graduate Professional License. 

This program is not intended to lead to licensure.

To take this certificate, you must be a current classroom teacher with a valid teaching license. You will apply to ODU as a non-degree graduate student and submit a separate application to the Literacy Coaching Certificate program by contacting the program director at reading@odu.edu.
