Why ODU for Animal Anesthesia and Handling?

Safe and ethical animal care is essential to biomedical research. The Laboratory Animal Anesthesia and Handling Techniques Certificate provides international students with foundational skills in anesthesia, surgical support, and laboratory animal handling.

Through a combination of coursework and practical experience, students will learn how to:

  • Prepare and handle surgical instruments and equipment
  • Induce and monitor anesthesia in laboratory animals
  • Perform post-surgical care and maintain surgical records
  • Conduct hands-on procedures such as suturing, imaging, and embryo manipulation across multiple species

When you complete this certificate, you will be prepared to support research teams with safe, competent, and ethical laboratory animal care techniques. You can also transfer these credits into the the Laboratory Animal Science (MS) program at ODU.

Note: This certificate is exclusively available to international applicants, allowing them to fulfill the United States entrance Visa requirements.
