Why ODU for Personal Financial Planning?

Our Personal Financial Planning course empowers you to take control of your financial future. In just six weeks, you’ll gain practical tools to manage budgeting, debt, insurance, investing, retirement and estate planning—with a focus on real-world application.

Drawing on negotiation strategies inspired by Chris Voss, the course helps you ask better questions, recognize financial motivations, and confidently create and adjust your personal financial plan.

You'll learn about:

  • The financial planning process, setting goals, and the psychology of money
  • Creating a budget, tracking expenses, managing credit, and strategies for debt reduction
  • Risks, types of insurance (health, life, property), and how to evaluate coverage
  • Basics of investing, asset allocation, risk tolerance, and evaluating investment options
  • Retirement savings vehicles, Social Security, tax strategies, and withdrawal planning

This course is ideal for working professionals and adult learners looking to apply negotiation strategies, build a personal financial plan, and critically evaluate financial advice. Upon completing the program, you will earn a certificate of completion from ODU.
