Kaltura

Kaltura is a cloud-based video management system for storing, publishing and streaming videos, video collections, video quizzes and other media. The system integrates with Canvas, allowing faculty to create, upload and share multimedia content with ease.

Kaltura My Media is your personal media repository. Video or audio can be recorded directly in My Media or uploaded from your computer. Your stored media can be kept private indefinitely, shared with other faculty and staff as collaborators, or published to any of your courses. You can access your My Media account from the global navigation menu in Canvas.

To share media with your students, embed media directly into any Canvas page using the Embed Kaltura tool or publish it to the Kaltura Media Gallery of a specific course.

Notes

  • Machine-generated closed captions are generated for all content. These captions must be edited manually for Section 508 compliance, as they can contain inaccuracies.
  • Kaltura provides basic editing tools to create clips of videos and media.
  • The Kaltura Embed Tool enables embedding media content to any location in Canvas where the Rich Content Editor is available (e.g., Pages, Assignment Instructions, Discussion prompts, Announcements).
  • Any videos added into Canvas either via the Embed tool or by publishing to the course Media Gallery will copy over from term to term.
  • Lectures recorded from the Course Collaboration Tool are automatically stored in My Media and can additionally be set for automatic publishing to your course's Media Gallery.
  • Students have their own My Media account and can embed their videos into Canvas Discussions posts using the Embed tool.
  • Video quizzes can be created for any of your videos and published to a Canvas Course. Kaltura Video Quizzes will only work with videos in My Media.
