Turnitin
Turnitin provides a plagiarism detection tool that is integrated with Canvas. With this tool, instructors can check for similarities in written work and teach the importance of integrity.
Once assignments are submitted, instructors will see color-coded flags in the Canvas gradebook showing a preliminary result of similarity findings. Additionally, instructors may view a similarity report on the Turnitin site for richer details and may choose to share the similarity reports with students.
Notes
- Important: the AI checker is not reliable! While the similarity checker has the ability to check for the use of AI generative tools in writing, it is not infallible, and instructors should review results carefully. The AI checker often provides false positives.
- To create a Canvas assignment that will check for similarities:
- Submission type: select “Online” then select “File upload”
- The “Plagiarism Review” section will become available; select “Turnitin”
- Select the options for what to compare against and for which items to exclude in the similarity report that match your assignment needs.
- If you want to allow students to upload a draft to check for plagiarism before submitting their final draft, you would have to create a separate assignment from the final draft submission and select the option “Do not store the submitted papers” in the “Store submissions in” section for the initial draft.
- Consider selecting “After assignment is graded” in the “Show report to students” dropdown so that you have an opportunity to assess the submission, including the report results, prior to releasing it to students.
