ODU's high-quality coursework is designed for online success, with the same academic standards that support ODU students across modalities.

Choosing the right bachelor’s in accounting program is not just a question of cost and availability. It’s also about finding a program that fits your world, supports your growth, fosters flexibility and builds in-demand skills that keep you moving forward. Before you commit, ask these questions to help you find a supportive program that will meet you where you are, from work schedules to military moves.

How flexible is the accounting program?

Online programs offer the most flexibility for learners with other commitments, such as work, athletics, travel or family. In Old Dominion University’s online accounting program through ODUGlobal, most classes are offered in an accelerated eight-week format with minimal live elements, meaning you can fit your program into your schedule. You’ll learn through high-quality coursework designed for online success, with the same academic standards that support ODU students across modalities.

Will I have an internship or hands-on learning opportunities?

Investigate what you’ll learn in the accounting program. Look for coursework designed around industry-recognized tools and applications like Excel and QuickBooks. You may want to seek out instruction on Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) standards, which will help you navigate authoritative accounting standards. An internship or practicum experience in the field, whether it’s elective or required, can also boost your resume as you begin searching for jobs.

ODU’s online bachelor’s in accounting offers all these opportunities, plus:

  • Courses designed to help you build mastery of skills employers require for entry-level accounting roles
  • Comprehensive accounting practice sets so you can engage in real-world projects and simulations
  • Analysis of ethical dilemmas to strengthen your decision-making skills
  • AI-enhanced career preparation, including resume reviews and interview simulations
  • An elective internship or practicum course where you can build professional work experience matched to your interests

Does the accounting program have any unique industry partnerships or learning experiences?

A bachelor’s program can provide additional value by giving students chances to connect with industry partners, network with prospective employers, or learn special skills. This could look like a career fair, a workshop or access to networking opportunities with active professionals.

ODU accounting students can participate in the annual Accounting Readiness Workshop held in August. The Accounting Readiness Workshop integrates experiential learning, employer engagement and career preparation so students can successfully compete for internships, leadership roles and full-time positions in the accounting profession.

  • Connect with accounting professionals, firms and industry leaders at a pivotal point.
  • Receive individualized feedback from practicing professionals in a resume review workshop.
  • Attend industry-led panels covering timely topics like artificial intelligence, professional skill development and career leadership.

The workshop is made possible through strong collaboration among faculty leadership, advisory council members, accounting firms, industry partners and student organizations like Beta Alpha Psi.

Is the program friendly to military students?

Military students need programs that maximize their experience and previous training. At ODUGlobal, our team understands military life and can help you navigate education benefits, maximize transfer credit and balance coursework with service or transition goals. The flexible online format of the accounting program allows you to continue your education wherever life takes you.

ODU has a signed military pathway agreement for the online Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) program, including the accounting major. This agreement may grant academic credit to U.S. military service members and veterans for their experience and training, thereby shortening the time to earn this bachelor's degree.

Do I want to pursue a graduate degree after earning my bachelor’s?

If graduate school might be in your future, consider a bachelor’s program that offers a smooth transition to a master’s program. ODUGlobal offers an early-entry option for the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Public Administration programs. You could earn graduate credits while you complete your bachelor's degree in accounting at ODU. Check out our MBA Early Entry program or MPA Early Start program for details.

Is the accounting program accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)?

AACSB accreditation is important because it sets the standards for business education. Its stamp indicates an institution has reached the highest standard of quality. Only 6% of institutions have met the rigorous standards required to achieve AACSB accreditation.

The Strome College of Business at ODU and its accounting program are AACSB-accredited. This means students graduate ready for upward mobility in their careers thanks to dedicated faculty, updated curriculum and coursework aligned with industry demand.

What are the requirements for Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam eligibility in my state?

Every state has different eligibility requirements for the CPA exam. If your goal is to become a licensed CPA, review both your state’s requirements and the accounting programs you’re interested in to understand what steps you need to take to prepare for licensure. The online bachelor’s in accounting through ODUGlobal is not intended to lead to a specific state-level license.
