If you have a non-teaching bachelor's degree, this secondary education online master's degree can get you started on a teaching career in Virginia.

You will choose an area of content concentration from:

Required Courses

  • 34 credit hours minimum

Your coursework will include professional education, a practicum, and a Teacher Candidate Internship.

If you do not have a bachelor's degree in the content area you wish to teach, you will need to take additional courses for in your content area.

Online Learning Environment

Participate in live, regularly scheduled online class meetings and access course materials online from any location. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • In-state Virginia Residents$571 per credit hour*
  • Out-of-state Students$595 per credit hour

State Licensure

This program is designed for students who have a non-teaching bachelor's degree. It will prepare them to obtain a Virginia initial teaching license for grades 6-12.

How to Apply

This program is designed for Virginia teacher licensure. You should have a non-teaching bachelor's degree in liberal arts or sciences. If your degree is in a different area, you may need to take prerequisite courses.

You will apply to ODU as a graduate student and submit a separate application to this program in ODU's Darden College of Education.
