Why ODU for a Mathematics Specialist master's degree?

Take a leadership role in your educational community to impact the mathematics achievement and success of preK-8 students. Our curriculum will provide you with a strong background in mathematics content, robust pedagogical practices, assessment strategies for learning understandings, and working with diverse student populations. You will also have opportunities to practice and craft your leadership skills. 

Strengthen your ability to:

  • Re-examine connections among key concepts in preK-8 curriculum aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards
  • Leverage processes and practices for developing content understanding
  • Use effective tasks to enhance students' mathematical confidence
  • Gain a deeper understanding of students’ mathematical thinking and cognitive development

In addition, you will learn how to:

  • Support learners through culturally responsive pedagogy and reform-oriented instruction
  • Facilitate professional learning and bridge the gap between research and practice

This degree is intended for educators with a current Virginia license and a bachelor’s degree related to teaching elementary or middle school mathematics.

Upon graduation, you will be eligible for licensure endorsement as a math specialist (preK-8) in Virginia.

Required Courses

  • 33 credit hours, including an internship

You will take four education content courses, five math content courses, five STEM leadership course, and one math specialist internship. This internship can be completed in your local school division or school of employment. 

You will earn a Master of Science in elementary education with a mathematics specialist endorsement. Already have a master's degree? You can pursue the endorsement only.

Online Learning Environment

Access course materials online from any location. Some classes will have live, regular online meeting times, while others will not. Instructors may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. This program requires a practicum or internship. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

Calculating Cost

  • In-state Virginia Residents$547 per credit hour*
  • Out-of-state Students$595 per credit hour

How to Apply

This degree is intended for educators with a current Virginia license and a bachelor’s degree related to teaching elementary or middle school mathematics.

To apply for admission in this master's degree, you must:

  • Have three years of successful classroom experience in teaching mathematics
  • Hold a teaching-related bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with an overall program GPA of 3.0
  • Hold the Virginia Collegiate Professional License or an equivalent license from another state
