Preparing for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is about much more than passing an exam. It's about developing the ability to think strategically, make sound HR decisions, and apply knowledge to real workplace situations.
When I prepared for my own SHRM certification, I enrolled in Old Dominion University's SHRM Certification Prep+ course and studied using the official SHRM Certification Prep System and the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (SHRM BASK®). The program gave me a strong foundation, a structured study plan, and the accountability I needed to stay consistent throughout my preparation.
As I progressed through the course, I realized that success wasn't about memorizing information—it was about understanding the SHRM BASK®, thinking through workplace scenarios, and learning to approach questions as SHRM expects HR professionals to.
As a bilingual HR professional, I also realized that some of the most valuable learning happens through conversation. Having the opportunity to discuss complex concepts, workplace scenarios, and HR terminology in both English and Spanish can deepen understanding, strengthen connections between ideas, and build greater confidence throughout the certification journey.
That experience inspired the SHRM Certification Prep+ with Bilingual (Spanish) Support program at Old Dominion University. This is not a Spanish SHRM certification course. The SHRM Certification Prep System, course materials, and exam preparation remain entirely in English, just as the SHRM certification exam is delivered. What makes this program different is the learning experience.
Participants will study using the official SHRM Certification Prep System while exploring the SHRM BASK® through interactive discussions, real-world HR scenarios, guided practice, and collaborative learning. Throughout the course, bilingual participants have the opportunity to clarify key concepts, terminology, behavioral competencies, and technical HR knowledge in both English and Spanish whenever additional support is needed to strengthen understanding and confidence.
For many professionals, preparing for a certification happens while balancing a full-time career, family responsibilities, and an already demanding schedule. That reality shaped every decision we made while designing this program.
Our goal is to create a learning experience that complements the SHRM Certification Prep System by combining live instruction, guided practice labs, independent study resources, and ongoing support to help participants prepare with structure, community, and confidence.
One of the most valuable aspects of this experience is the opportunity to learn alongside other HR professionals. Some of the best learning happens through conversation—sharing workplace experiences, discussing how the SHRM BASK® applies to real organizational challenges, and learning from one another's perspectives. For bilingual professionals, having the flexibility to participate in those conversations in both English and Spanish creates an environment where confidence, participation, and deeper learning naturally grow.
Ultimately, this program is not about translating the SHRM Certification Prep System or the SHRM BASK®. It is about helping bilingual HR professionals build the confidence to understand the framework, apply it to workplace situations, strengthen their strategic thinking, and approach the SHRM certification exam feeling prepared—not only with knowledge, but with clarity, confidence, and a community that supports their success.
