SmarterProctoring
SmarterProctoring is a remote proctoring platform that provides a range of proctoring options for online exams. This service uses a single integrated proctoring interface for all students and faculty to access the proctoring services.
SmarterProctoring is intended for high-stakes exams and should be scaffolded with non-proctored, low-stakes assessments in Canvas. This allows students to familiarize themselves with the content and how to use the Canvas Quizzes tool.
Faculty can select which proctoring options to make available for each exam. Students taking online courses can schedule, reschedule, and take their exam using a web browser.
SmarterProctoring options include:
- Automated On-Demand Proctoring
- No appointment is required; available 24/7/365 and on-demand by students.
- This online system will record the student’s screen and webcam during the exam session. A SmarterProctoring professional will review the video to ensure the exam instructions are followed.
- Requires the Chrome web browser and webcam.
- Automated proctoring is not available for written paper and pencil exams.
- Live Online Proctoring
- An appointment is required.
- Students make an appointment to take their exam with a live proctor inside SmarterProctoring. A trained person from SmarterProctoring will monitor their exam session virtually.
- Live online proctoring is not available for written paper and pencil exams.
- Testing Center Services
- An appointment is required.
- Students can make an appointment at an ODU testing center or other ODU-approved testing centers to take their exam in a proctored environment at that location.
- Pre-screened Third-Party Individuals
- SmarterProctoring has a network of proctors who will be visible based on the student’s location if this option is enabled for the exam. In addition, other individuals can act as proctors in an appropriate setting as long as ODU, the instructor, or both approve them. Proctors must be neutral people who are not related to, friends with, or in a financial relationship with the student.
- If a student cannot find a proctor from the options available, they may request an Ad Hoc Proctor, which takes additional time. After submitting a request, it may take up to five business days for a proctor to be assigned.
Information on Room Scans
As an instructor, you have the ability to configure various security features for automated and live remote proctoring sessions. If you choose to enable room scans, students will need to use their webcam to show their testing environment. ODU policy mandates that exams be taken at a desk or table. If you prefer, you can specify in the proctor notes in SmarterProctoring that students should only show their desk area.
Information on Desktop App Check
During exam session on-boarding, instructors can require students to download and install the SmarterProctoring Desktop App Check. This option can be enabled within the security settings for Automated On-Demand or Live Online (remote) Proctoring sessions. If you choose to use this utility for your exam, please advise students that they must use either a MacOS or Windows computer. Desktop App Check does not support Chromebooks or mobile devices.
