Today's education system needs well-trained and well-qualified special education teachers. 

Upon graduation, you will be eligible for Virginia Licensure, and you will be Highly Qualified in elementary education.

** Pending approval from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, this degree will transition to a Bachelor of Science in Special Education in Fall 2019. The B.S. degree will require 120 credits total (a minimum of 30 credit hours must be earned from ODU). Get Guaranteed Admission at Old Dominion University

We've partnered with the Virginia Community College System and select educational institutions to make transferring easy. The Guaranteed Admission Agreement is intended to ease the transfer process between the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and Old Dominion University (ODU).

Required Courses

  • 40-41 credit hours for major content + 42 credit hours for professional education/practica
  • The practicum/internship requires a clearance background check.

Online Learning Environment

Attend class online on a regular schedule and access course materials online from any location. This program requires a practicum or internship during normal school hours. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • With additional training, experience, and/or education: School Administration: Principalship, Superintendency, Media/Library/Information Services, Curriculum Supervision, Subject Area Supervision

Note for students in Washington State from the Student Achievement Council:

"Eligibility for initial education certification in Washington is based on completion of a state approved educator preparation program. This program is approved in Virginia and is authorized for field placements in Washington by the Professional Educators Standards Board. Even though you may be residing in Washington while in this program, your application for educator certification in Washington will be processed as an out-of-state application. Go to http://pathway.pesb.wa.gov/archive/outofstate for more information. Teachers are advised to contact their individual school districts as to whether this program may qualify for teacher advancement."

  • In-state Virginia Residents$356 per credit hour*
  • Out-of-State Students$407 per credit hour

Active duty military students may qualify for a discounted undergraduate tuition rate.

These tuition rates are effective Summer 2019 and subject to change.

Finish your degree with us. We offer the upper division (300 and 400 level) courses you'll need. Our enrollment team will review your credits from other higher education institutions. Then you can apply them toward a degree from ODU.

For this program, you'll need to be accepted as a degree-seeking student and take the Praxis Core.
