Modeling & Simulation Engineering Minor Online

  • Minor
  • Batten College of Engineering & Technology
  • Department of Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering

Modeling and simulation engineering involves taking a concept, hypothesis or design and testing it in real-world conditions. You'll use tools tools like:

  • Graphical and mathematical models
  • Virtual reality simulations
  • Serious gaming
  • Computer programming
  • 3D printed models
  • Statistical analysis

ODU offers two tracks in this minor: simulation development and simulation application.

The development track is a good fit for computer science and engineering students who want to learn discrete event simulation development and focus on software development. This can lead to careers in gaming software development, animation, and large scale simulation development.

The application track is a good fit for electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer science students. In this track, you'll study complex systems through the use of computer simulations. You'll learn skills to go beyond the capabilities of existing computer simulation tools to model complex systems and study system behavior.

    • 12 credit hours (four courses)

A minor can only be earned as part of an undergraduate program. Talk with an ODUGlobal enrollment coordinator to determine if you have credits that will transfer.

  • Participate in live, regularly scheduled online class meetings and access course materials online from any location. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • Modeling and simulation engineers assist with tasks such as:

    • Designing and manufacturing simulation-based team training systems for the medical field, military training and mission rehearsal
    • Designing and building computer games for education and entertainment
    • Analyzing land use and transportation system designs
    • Enhancing and improving complex social networks
  • In-state Virginia Residents
    $393 per credit hour*
    Out-of-State Students
    $426 per credit hour

Active duty military students may qualify for a discounted undergraduate tuition rate.

These tuition rates are effective Fall 2023 and subject to change.
    * In-state rate assumes residency requirements are met.

A dedicated enrollment team for your major will guide your transition to ODUGlobal.
