ODU’s approach to this master's degree program is uniquely interdisciplinary, drawing faculty expertise and coursework from engineering and technology, business, arts and letters, and the sciences.

Your core courses will give you a solid foundation in data science, data analytics, statistics, and data visualization.

You will gain proficiency using state-of-the-art programming languages, tools, and software packages to perform analytics on complex data including big data. You will also learn how to visually represent complex data to effectively communicate your findings to higher management and assist decision-making.

Our program includes a concentration of your choice, and culminates in a capstone project related to your concentration. When you graduate, you will earn a Master of Science with a major in data science and analytics.

Choose from four concentrations to focus on data science and analytics in your area of interest:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning - Learn how to transform data into actionable information for organizations seeking data-driven recommendations.
  • Business Intelligence & Analytics - Prepare to enter rapidly emerging fields related to data analytics such as video analytics, algorithms and data structures, natural language processing, and information retrieval.
  • Engineering & Big Data Analytics - Learn the methods and technologies to handle big data and instill engineering problem-solving skills rooted in big data solutions.
  • Geospatial Analytics - Gain a foundation in geospatial technology to prepare data for analysis and perform suitability analysis, spatial predictive modeling, geostatistics, and space-time pattern mining and object detection.

    • 30 credit hours

    You will take five core courses, four courses in your chosen concentration, and one capstone project course.

  • Access course materials online from any location. Some classes will have live, regular online meeting times, while others will not. The instructor may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • Graduates of this program are knowledgeable and skilled at:

    • developing statistical models to detect trends;
    • organizing and managing data; and
    • leading teams in the retrieving, cleaning data, and modeling data.

  • In addition to meeting general graduate student admission requirements, you should have:

    • Undergraduate coursework or experience in computer science, mathematics, statistics, information technology, engineering, or a related field.
    • GRE scores with 50% or better on quantitative reasoning. If you already have an advanced degree, related work experience, and/or related military training, you can apply for a GRE waiver.
  • You may be able to take up to four courses (12 credit hours) as a non-degree graduate student, before you are accepted into a specific degree program.
