Why ODU for Special Education?

This course option is available for students pursuing endorsement in special education without a master’s degree, or for those who hold a provisional license in special education and seek to complete licensure requirements.

This licensure option meets Virginia Department of Education certification and endorsement requirements for any one or more of the following areas:

  • early childhood special education
  • special education: general curriculum (mild disabilities)
  • special education: adapted curriculum (severe disabilities)
  • visual impairment

* Note: This program is not available in the state of Washington.

Required Courses

  • Credit hours determined by your previous coursework

There are both undergraduate and graduate level courses in this endorsement program.

Online Learning Environment

Attend class online on a regular schedule and access course materials online from any location. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar. 

To complete course work in this endorsement, you will be required to purchase a membership to LiveText—a web-based portfolio assessment system approved by the ODU Teacher Education Council.

Keep in mind that this program is designed for Virginia licensure, and other states may have different requirements for teacher licensure.

Calculating Cost

  • In-state Undergraduate$374 per credit hour
  • Out-of-state Undergraduate$407 per credit hour
  • In-state Graduate$571 per credit hour
  • Out-of-state Graduate$595 per credit hour

This program includes both undergraduate and graduate level courses.

Rates are effective Summer 2022 and subject to change.
* In-state rate assumes residency requirements are met.

State Licensure

This licensure-only program is designed to prepare students for Virginia endorsement in special education. It can also help teachers with a provisional Virginia license in special education to complete licensure requirements.

How to Apply

This program is designed for Virginia teacher licensure and endorsement. You should have an undergraduate degree in the arts and sciences, or equivalent. For this endorsement, you will apply to ODU as a non-degree seeking graduate student. Regular and provisional admittance requirements, including Praxis, are detailed on the department's web page.
