Why ODU for Teacher Education?

Are you a licensed middle and/or secondary teacher? This online Master of Science in Education degree will help you improve and update your teaching skills.

Graduates will know how to conduct powerful educational research. This research is intended to transform the teacher's instructional practice and beliefs about teaching, which impacts their classrooms and their schools.

Upon graduation, licensed teachers may upgrade their licensure to the Postgraduate Professional level. 

Courses emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of teaching in diverse settings. You'll also examine the potential for educators to act as agents of change and engage in reflective inquiry throughout the program.

This program is cohort-based and can be completed in just over 18 months.

Online Learning Environment

Access course materials online from any location. Some classes will have live, regular online meeting times, while others will not. The instructor may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

Careers in Secondary Education

This program is designed for licensed teachers in Virginia. If you hold a current teaching license and complete all requirements for this MSEd program, you will be ready to upgrade your teaching license to the Postgraduate Professional level.

Keep in mind that other states may have different requirements for professional development and continuing education for teachers.

  • Out-of-state Students$595 per credit hour

This program is designed for licensed teachers in Virginia to upgrade their teaching license to the Postgraduate Professional level.

How to Apply

To apply, you must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university, and hold a Virginia Professional License or an equivalent from another state in middle or secondary education. For full application requirements, please visit ODU's Department of Teaching and Learning website.
