Britney Shelton ‘22 always knew she wanted to make a difference.

Growing up in Mount Airy, North Carolina, her desire to attend college and leave a meaningful mark began early. Her journey, however, took an inspiring turn when a high school psychology class reshaped her path.

Shelton initially planned to pursue a pharmacy career while taking college classes through a high school dual-enrollment program. That changed during her junior year when a psychology course ignited her passion for understanding human behavior. The class altered her career plans, leading her to complete her associate degree while still in high school and ultimately enroll in Old Dominion University’s online psychology program through ODUGlobal.

“I chose ODUGlobal because it offered the flexibility I needed from a fully accredited program, and had incredible reviews,” Shelton shared. “When I was accepted and received a scholarship, I knew I had chosen the right place.”

For Shelton, the ability to study fully online was essential, not just to balance her education with life but also to continue learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shelton says ODUGlobal made her feel connected and supported every step of the way.

“ODUGlobal’s resources were phenomenal,” she said. “From academic advising to IT support, I always felt like I had someone to turn to. The university went above and beyond to make me feel connected, even when I was studying from home.”

Shelton also cited the importance of her professors who gave her the tools and confidence to succeed.

“Professor Cheryl Champagne’s English class helped me improve my writing and offered advice that shaped my educational path, and Professor Cathy Barraco’s abnormal psychology course sparked my interest in the subject.”

"Shelton was an exceptional student in my class,” Barraco said. “It was clearly evident through her work that she was fully engaged and took full advantage of the learning opportunities.”

Following graduation, Shelton secured a position as a teaching assistant at a local elementary school. Since then, she’s earned her master’s degree in developmental psychology with high distinction and now serves as an adjunct psychology instructor at Surry Community College. Shelton is currently pursuing her doctorate, with dreams of becoming a full-time professor and opening her own mental health practice.

“My psychology degree allows me to make a difference every day,” Shelton said. “Whether it’s teaching college students, supporting young children or providing help to those struggling with mental health challenges, I’m able to use what I’ve learned to impact others in meaningful ways.”

For those considering ODUGlobal, Shelton has one message: “Go for it! ODUGlobal gives you the tools to succeed while allowing you to control your learning journey. A degree through ODUGlobal will kickstart your career, life and education in more ways than you can imagine.”
