She began her college education at Central Virginia Community College and has taken courses at Southside Virginia Community College; Piedmont Virginia Community College; and received her A.A.S. in Nursing from Virginia Western Community College in 1993. She started her RN to MSN journey at the ODU/PVCC Distance Learning campus fall 2009. She graduated from ODU with her BSN in August 2011 with a 4.00 GPA. She graduated from the MSN program August 2012 with a 4.00 GPA. Rebecca has an incredible ability to balance her work life with that of her personal life that includes a husband and three extremely active and involved sons.

Rebecca is also incredibly active and involved in nursing leadership in our community. She serves as the chair of the Professional Nursing Staff Organization's Clinical Practice Committee for UVA Hospital. This committee reviews all nursing practice throughout the UVA Health system. Rebecca authors the monthly practice newsletter, which serves to notify staff of current best practice and changes in practices standards. In addition, Rebecca is a member of a number of other institutional committees, including the Children's Hospital practice and procedure committee, the Critical Care Procedure Committee, the Nursing Congress, and the Patient Care Committee

Patricia Scherrer MD, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine UVA described Rebecca "as simply delightful to work with. Her energy, enthusiasm, and sunny disposition motivate everyone around her. Children and their families love the opportunity to have her as their bedside nurse. She is definitely one of my favorite people to have around in the ICU."

This past August during the ODU Nursing Convocation, Rebecca received the Chairs award for having a 4.0 and Dr. Helen Petro-Yura award for leadership, academic excellence, and scholarship. This is a faculty award for the graduate student with outstanding achievement based on end of program behaviors and university, professional, and/or community service.
