This program will give you a solid foundation in electrical engineering technology and practical skills to apply to real world power systems.

Your required courses and electives cover topics such as: 

  • electrical power and machinery
  • electrical power systems
  • energy and the environment
  • smart grids
  • computer aided circuit simulations

You also will take core courses in circuits, electronic devices, digital electronics, linear electronics, microprocessors, and programming.

When you graduate, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET) with a major in Electrical Engineering Technology.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in Virginia and many other states. These exams are the first step to licensure as a professional engineer.

ODU's Electrical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET, www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Electrical/Electronic(s) Engineering Technology Program Criteria.

We've partnered with the Virginia Community College System and select educational institutions to make transferring easy. The Guaranteed Admission Agreement is intended to ease the transfer process between the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and Old Dominion University (ODU).

  • To earn a bachelor's degree from ODU, you must complete at least 30 credit hours with us. This BSET program requires 127 total credit hours minimum and includes a minor in engineering or science.

    Talk with our enrollment team to determine how your credits will transfer.

  • Participate in live, regularly scheduled online class meetings and access course materials online from any location. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.

  • Our engineering technology programs prepare you for immediate work on complex technical problems.

    When you graduate, you'll be prepared to work with power systems, alternative energies, machinery, and power transmission related jobs.

This program is designed to prepare you for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, the first step to licensure as a professional engineer in several states. In general, licensure is not required to work in this field, but some employers may require it.
