If you're starting online classes or are just getting back to school after some time off, there are a few things you need to do to get ready. This will set you up for success throughout the class and the semester. Come back to this check list before the start of every class and get started on the right foot!

Before the first day of class:

  • Talk about expectations with your family and employer

Although online classes are designed to work with your busy life, going back to school will still impact many aspects of your day-to-day routine. Be clear and candid with your coworkers and family about how your availability may change. Aim to leave the discussion with a clear understanding of what is flexible and inflexible in your obligations so that you can plan accordingly. Having this knowledge ahead of time will make the whole semester go smoother.

Before class starts:

  • Eat and sleep well

Starting on the path to a degree or certificate is big deal! Many students lose a little sleep the night before classes start. But even with first-day jitters, you should try to get a good night's sleep and eat well so you'll be at 100% for your class.

  • Stake out a spot for studying

Start to establish your routine and "zones" as soon as you can. Even if you sometimes complete readings or assignments on the fly, try to do your classwork in your study spot. When you have a designated area, it'll train your brain to know when it's time to get down to business, and it'll be a signal to your family and friends that you're hard at work.

  • Test the tech

Your online class may require that you log in to websites you never visited before or use plugins and software you've never used like WebEx. Make sure you know how you'll be accessing your class and run a test beforehand. Don't forget to make sure your logins work and you have everything you need to get to the courses and materials. Check out ODU's technology guidelines here.

During class:

  • Introduce yourself to your classmates

Your classmates, advisor, and instructors will be some of the strongest allies you have in your educational journey. Make a good first impression! Say hello when it is appropriate, and follow up with classmates, especially when you have a cooperative project. Don't be afraid to reach out if you need to or if you have questions. If you're interested in virtual study groups, bring up that possibility. Although they may seem far away, your classmates are a part of this experience too, and they can provide valuable knowledge and support as you complete your classes.

After class:

  • Put important dates in your planner

Once you have your syllabus, record all the due dates, exams, quizzes, and lectures to your planner of choice. This will help you plan for study time in advance. Your future self will thank you!
