FAQs About Our Laptop Loan Program

All degree-seeking and academic certificate-seeking students enrolled in an upcoming or current semester are eligible. Additionally:

  • Priority is given to students who have filed a FAFSA and demonstrated financial need.
  • Participation is subject to approval based on application submission and laptop availability.
  • Participant must be in good standing with ODU without disciplinary holds.

When all laptops have been loaned for the upcoming term, the application process will be deactivated.

Complete the Laptop Application and Loan Agreement. The priority deadlines for applying are June 15 (Fall semester) and December 5 (Spring semester). If there are no laptops for loan, the application for the loan program will be closed.

A limited number of Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 5 laptops are available for loan, each equipped with an Intel® Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and a 14" touchscreen. These laptops come with Lenovo’s Premier Support Plus plan.

During the loan period, the laptops are treated as personal technology. Anything not listed above or included as part of Lenovo’s Premier Support Plus plan is the responsibility of the student.

There is no tracking software installed on these laptops. Upon return, the university wipes all data and resets it to default factory settings before loaning it again.

Please note: If a student is found in violation of Old Dominion University’s  Information Technology Standard 09.1.0: Acceptable Use Standard or the Code of Student Conduct ODU may request the return of the laptop and data may be reviewed.

All applicants will be notified of their status at their student email address by August 1 for Fall semester loans and January 5 for Spring semester loans.

Pending timely receipt of the Laptop Application and Loan Agreement, laptops will be shipped early August or early January to approved students. ODU will pay for the shipping of the laptops to and from students. Student signatures are required to receive the laptop. Upon receipt of the laptop, students should KEEP ALL ORIGINAL PACKAGING, INCLUDNG PAPERWORK, FOR THE RETURN SHIPMENT.

Upon receipt of the laptop, students will need to power on the device and run through the Windows setup.  After setup, students will need to log in to Microsoft Office and other programs with their ODU email (Midas) to gain access.

The loans are generally on a term-to-term basis. Students must meet the continuance requirements as specified in the Laptop Application and Loan Agreement they sign at the time of application. As specified in the agreement, to keep the laptop for the next term, students must complete the Future Laptop Needs Form by the “Exams end” date indicated in ODU’s academic calendar.

Students should KEEP ALL ORIGINAL PACKAGING, INCLUDING PAPERWORK, FOR THE RETURN SHIPMENT.

Students no longer eligible to participate in the Laptop Loan Program must return the laptop. To initiate the process, students must complete the Future Laptop Needs Form by the “Exams end” date indicated in ODU’s academic calendar

A shipping label will be sent to the student. Upon receipt, the laptop should be shipped in its original packaging within 5 business days. A checklist is provided below to ensure the laptop is returned as required.

  1. Locate the original packaging and paperwork for the laptop. If you do not have the original box, you will need to purchase another box that is designed for shipping laptops.
  2. Be sure to include the charger and cords. If you lose the charger, you will need to replace it. [Replacement part number 4X20M26268 may be ordered at a discount here.]
  3. Place the laptop in the box and secure it with packing materials. Place packaging tape across the box opening.
  4. When you get the return label, place it on top of the original shipping label on the original box.
  5. Place the laptop in the box and secure it with packing materials. Place packaging tape across the box opening.
  6. Drop the laptop off at FedEx.

Timely return is necessary so that the laptop may be prepared for shipment to an eligible student.
