This degree program is designed for military servicemembers or veterans who have completed U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School. Courses in this program cover topics such as:

  • computer-aided drafting,
  • statics,
  • strength of materials,
  • dynamics,
  • thermodynamics,
  • fluid mechanics,
  • automation and controls,
  • and computer solid modeling.

You'll complete a senior project that integrates course work with a practical project assignment in your area of interest. You will also select a minor in engineering or science. When you graduate, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology with a major in mechanical engineering technology. Your coursework will focus on nuclear systems.

ODU's Mechanical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET, www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program Criteria.

  • To earn this degree from ODU, you must complete at least 30 credit hours with us. This bachelor’s degree requires 127 total credit hours. 40-43 credits may be satisfied by completion of Naval Power School.

    Rates are effective Fall 2023 and subject to change. 

    For 2023-2024, the estimated cost of course materials/books/equipment for a full-time student is $1,800 per year.

As a graduate of this ABET-accrediated program, you are eligible to take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, the first step to licensure as a professional engineer in several states. In general, licensure is not required to work in this field, but some employers may require it.

  • To declare a major in Mechanical Engineering Technology, you must be accepted into ODU as a degree-seeking student and have ENGL 110C credit. To transfer credits for studying nuclear systems, you also must have completed U.S. Navy Nuclear Power School.
