Our online programs have deep roots

Over the last 85+ years, ODU has grown into a powerhouse for higher education with six colleges offering bachelor's, master's, doctorate, and education specialist degrees, plus certificates and professional training.

We had an early start in distance learning. Our very first distance learning course was broadcast on local television in 1958. Throughout the 1980s, we developed course delivery methods to let students attend class remotely at community colleges and on Navy ships at sea.

In 1994, we launched a formal distance learning program called TeleTechNet that relied on satellite networks. As technology advanced, we moved from satellite and VHS tapes to video streaming, to online courses.

Today, this program is called ODUOnline, and its reach is worldwide.

Built by ODU, taught by ODU

All programs offered through ODUOnline have the same content and rigor as programs taught at ODU's main campus. You'll be taught by the same ODU faculty, and your classmates will probably include campus students.

As we've grown, we've built a team of instructional designers and developers with the expertise to create online courses that help you learn. They design the best way to deliver instructional materials, from video to texts, by working with the faculty who teach each course.

When you graduate, you'll receive the same diploma as every student who graduates from ODU, on campus or online.

“I have grown to appreciate the academic rigor of the program and the professionalism of the staff.

"The positive reputation of ODU ensures that my education and degree will be valuable to future employers. Pursuing a degree at this university is one of the best decisions I have ever made.”
